Writing a Book Proposal

Writing a book proposal is similar to writing a business document. We may feel creative while writing a book that inspires us, but in the book market, publishers are seeking books that sell. The bottom line is that publishing is a business, regardless of how creative the endeavor is.

Writing a Book Proposal The ultimate goal is to find a balance between what inspires us and what will sell in the market.

We still have to learn and teach while writing a proposal. This means that we have to research our title’s sales potential and present it to a publisher almost like a business plan. The publisher wants to know the following:

  • What the book is about
  • Why it is timely and press worthy
  • How it compares to other books on the market
  • When it will be ready
  • Where the author will promote it
  • Who the writer is, and his or her qualifications for writing the book

Giving publishers a wholistic view of your project through picture words or descriptive writing, pertinent newspaper quotes, statistics for audience interest, areas of media interest, and relevant quotes from your book will give them an accurate picture of their future investment. It will also give direction for the marketing of your book. Be sure to check each publisher’s specifications for submission requirements. Usually, you would include one to three sample chapters with the above information. Number all pages and submit in a large white or brown envelope. Do not staple your proposal. Add a clip or elastic to hold the pages in place.

We can help you prepare your book proposal. Our writers and editors read sections of your manuscript and help prepare the following:

  • An overview
  • Chapter outline
  • Market analysis and promotion
  • Author's credentials
  • Ten most suitable publishers
  • Five most suitable literary agents.

You will receive an electronic copy ready for submission to publishers. With this service, you can choose to have our editors research and provide contact information for ten of the most suitable publishers for your project and/or five of the most suitable literary agents. Traditionally published authors ensure the professionalism of each book proposal prepared.
