Writing a book proposal is similar to writing a business document. We may feel creative while writing a book that inspires us, but in the book market, publishers are seeking books that sell. The bottom line is that publishing is a business, regardless of how creative the endeavor is.

Giving publishers a wholistic view of your project through picture words or descriptive writing, pertinent newspaper quotes, statistics for audience interest, areas of media interest, and relevant quotes from your book will give them an accurate picture of their future investment. It will also give direction for the marketing of your book. Be sure to check each publisher’s specifications for submission requirements. Usually, you would include one to three sample chapters with the above information. Number all pages and submit in a large white or brown envelope. Do not staple your proposal. Add a clip or elastic to hold the pages in place.
